Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month begins today, September 15 and ends October 15. This date was chosen as the starting date for the reason being it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, and El Salvador. They declared their independence in the year 1821. Additionally, on September 16, 18, and 21, Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence.

Although it was observed as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, President Ronald Reagan extended it to a 30-day period in 1988. On August 17, 1988, it was enacted into law on the authorization of Public Law 100-402. This month is the time to acknowledge the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States, and to honor Hispanic culture and heritage.

I sometimes feel this month seems to go by unnoticed hence that is the reason for this post. All my beautiful Hispanics/Latinos take pride in your culture and celebrate this month designated to everyone from Hispanic backgrounds.
